Mysuru: Bhagyavathi, the Congress rebel candidate, was elected the new mayor on January 24 in the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) mayoral elections.

A total of 43 votes were cast in favour of rebel candidate Bhagyavati, while the Congress official candidate Kamala Uday lost. This loss is considered a huge setback for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on his home turf.

Soon after Congress announced the name of Kamal Uday as its official candidate, Bhagyavati, the other candidate in contention joined the rebel group to file her nomination.Bhagavathi was backed by the JDS-BJP alliance. JDS' Indira Mahesh was elected as the deputy mayor.

The Congress members were furious at the turn of events and a noisy clash erupted between Minister Tanveer Sait and JDS leader G T Devegowda. Congress members opposed the continuation of election process accusing the opposition of resorting to unethical practices.

For the final term of the present council, mayor and deputy mayor posts were reserved for women from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities. In the present 65-member MCC council, 21 members belong to Congress with JDS and BJP sharing 20 of and 13 seats respectively. Including independents there are 11 other members representing BSR, KJP and SDPI.
