Mangaluru, which was ranked third in a different list of cleanest cities in India under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan back in 2015, has been ranked a distant 63. It did not find a place in the 73 cities ranked in the Swacch Sarvekshan list last year either. Udupi ranks 143, and Bengaluru 210.

Gonda in Uttar Pradesh has got the dubious distinction of being the dirtiest city of India. New Delhi Municipal Council is placed at seventh place. Performance of cities in West Bengal have not been considered as the Mamata Banerjee-led government has not taken part in this survey.

Jharkhand and Chattisgarh states have performed well this time as per the survey whereas UP and Bihar have fared poorly. In UP, Varanasi is the only city to have got a honourable spot, having been ranked at No 32.

The ministry of urban development (MoUD) started the 'Swachh Survekshan' survey, ranking of cities on cleanliness and other aspects of urban sanitation in 2016, in which it ranked 73 cities across the country.
