Hubballi: Janata Dal (S) members who staged a protest in Hubballi have urged the Centre to give preference to local candidates while recruiting staff for the nationalised and regional rural banks and stop injustice being done to Kannada candidates in the banking appointments.

The protesters stated that only candidates who knew the local language should be appointed in local branches to ensure that even illiterate and semi-literates customers got banking services without any problems. They said if candidates from other states were allowed to grab the banking jobs in Karnataka the local candidates would be deprived of employment opportunities. Therefore, the Union Finance Ministry should change the rules and appoint banking staff as per the rules prescribed in 2014.

The Centre should also ensure compulsorily that banking job applicants have been residing in Karnataka for 10 years or have studyied Kannada as a subject till PUC while applying for jobs in state. The exams conducted for RRB clerk and probationary posts in 2017-18 should be cancelled. General English paper for IBPS, RRB and PO should be conducted in English and Kannada, instead of English and Hindi," they said. They submitted a memorandum to the Union Finance Minister through the Tahsildar's office. JD(s) leaders Rajanna Koravi, Altaf Kittur, and others took part.
