Traditional sand extraction in CRZ by August end

Manipal: Traditional sand extraction will begin in sand deposits located in Coastal Regulatory Zones (CRZ) by the end of this month, said Pramod Madhwaraj, District in-Charge Minister of Udupi.He was speaking to media persons at DC office Manipal on Wednesday, August 16.

"Shortage of sand will be matter of past once sand extraction starts. In the meantime, the district administration has decided to bring in several departments to keep tight vigil on illegal transportation of sand to other districts. Accordingly, department of Mines and Geology, Police, PDOs, PWD, Fire Force and others will be given responsibility," he said adding that permission has been given for transporting extracted said in small carriers like 407 tempos and not in heavy vehicles.

At present 133 permits would be issued for extraction of sand in the district, which includes 26 in Udupi, 84 in Brahmavar, 18 in Kundapur and five in Byndoor zone.The minister said that 28 sand deposits in CRZ area are hindering fishing activities and hence the Coastal Development Authority has the permission to remove the sand from these deposits. However, those who are engaged in traditional system of sand extraction can apply for the same by submitting proforma of application before Aug 27 from the Senior Geologist office in DC's office.
