Racing ahead of the Congress in opening subsidised canteens, the JD(S) in Karnataka has inaugurated the 'Namma Appaji Canteen'.

With eyes on the 2018 assembly elections, the JD(S) opened its first canteen in honour of party patriarch and former Prime Minister Deve Gowda on Wednesday. The JD(S) by inaugurating their canteen first, hoped to snatch the limelight away from Indira canteens.

The subsidised canteen is aimed at providing hygienic food to customers from poor families. Coffee and tea will be charged at Rs 3 per serving while breakfast items like Idly, Vada, Kesaribath and Khara bath will be Rs 5. Former Prime Minister Deve Gowda is famous for introduced the humble Ragi mudde (millet balls) to the world. At the Namma Appaji Canteen, Ragi mudde meal, rice meal will be charged at a mere Rs 10.

The JD(S) inaugurated its first Appaji canteen in Hanumanthanagar in south Bengaluru. The canteen will open at 8 AM and shut down at 3 PM post lunch. Depending on the response, the timing will be extended according to the party. The canteen is an attempt to replicate Tamil Nadu's populist Amma canteens.
