MYSURU: A first-of-its-kind in the country, Trin Trin, a public bicycle sharing (PBS) system, was launched in Mysuru on Sunday.

As many as 6.5 lakh people have registered for the services. The PBS system would have 450 bicycles (430 regular and 20 geared cycles) and 52 docking stations at tourist destinations, universities and offices.

The docking stations are automated and users can use a smart card to take cycles from one docking station and return the cycle at any other. On return of the cycle, a nominal user fee would be deducted from the smart card.

The Musuru City Corporation (MCC) and the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) have implemented the project at a cost of Rs 20.52 crore. A third-party vendor has been appointed through the tendering process to procure, install and operate the PBS system for six years.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched the services by pedaling a cycle and went around Hardinge Circle. He said the system will be introduced in Bengaluru this year.

“Air pollution in Bengaluru is high compared to Mysuru. Providing sustainable commuting option is the need of the hour. The service will be launched in Bengaluru soon,” Siddaramaiah said.

The Chief Minister called upon residents to make use of the bicycle service and reduce dependency on private vehicles in order to bring down air pollution.
