Hubballi: The intake of medical seats in Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here has been increased by 50 seats, from the existing 150 seats, from this academic year informed KIMS Director Dattatreya Bant.

Speaking to reporters, Dr Bant said that the KIMS will be next to Bengaluru Medical College & Research Institute (BMC) to admit more number of students to graduate medical course among the government medical colleges.

Presently, the KIMS is offering 150 seats, and the institute was continuously upgrading the infrastructure needed for increasing the intake for MBBS course. Finally, its efforts have been rewarded after the recent inspection of Medical Council of India (MCI), which assessed academic facilities and hospital infrastructure, and increased the intake, he said.

The additional 50 seats will benefit the poor talented students of the region. "From this academic year, 50 more seats will be added into seat matrix of admission for medical course," he added.

Dr Bant said the MCI team visited the KIMS twice and we rectified few deficiencies pointed out by the team during its visit. We also met all the criteria set by the MCI for increase in the seats. Later satisfied with the facilities at hand the team accorded 50 more seats he said.

Important aspects such as teaching quality, number of staff, number workshops, seminars organized among others were considered for increase in seats. KIMS has a total of 1,100 staff, of which 333 are teaching staff", the director said.
