Monsoon updates: Heavy rainstorm expected in Mumbai after June 8

Rains are expected to lash coastal Maharashtra and Goa in the next two days while heavy downpour is expected in Mumbai from June 8 to June 12, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast.

Southwestern Monsoon will continue to advance to remaining parts of Karnataka and  Rayalaseema, some  parts  of  south  Konkan,  Goa and Telangana, some more parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Central Bay of Bengal during next 48 hours, said IMD's weather bulletin on Wednesday (June 6) morning.

"Conditions are also likely to become favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into most parts of Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maharashtra,  some parts of Gujarat, southern parts of MadhyaPradesh Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal Sikkim, remaining parts of Northeastern states and most parts of Bay of Bengal during 09th to 11th June," IMD's latest bulletin said. 

"Conditions are very likely to become favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts ofMaharashtra, Telangana  Coastal Andhra Pradesh in subsequent 48 hours," it added. As far as Mumbai is concerned, extremely heavy rainfall is likely in the city from June 9 to 11. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has issued a warning in Mumbai and Thane. As per a TOI report, people have been advised to abstain from outdoor activities during the period and also watch for weather updates.

The IMD has predicted that with the strengthening of the monsoon, increased rains are expected in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Konkan belt and Goa, which may also lead to flooding.  During next 48 hours, the South-West monsoon is likely to advance in parts of Telangana. Southern districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall and one or two spells of heavy rain, reported news agency ANI on Tuesday (June 5) quoting a IMD official.

According to the IMD's prediction on distribution of rainfall this monsoon, the central India will get 'normal' rainfall but the southern Peninsula - Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry - may get 'below normal' rainfall. The north-east India is expected to get least rainfall (below normal) during the period. The monthly rainfall over the country as whole is likely to be 101% of its Long Period Average (LPA) during July, and 94% of the LPA during August - both with a model error of plus or minus 9%.
