On the occasion of International Women's Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a pan India expansion of the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" programme from Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district. The prime minister while hailing women power during his speech, expanded the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" programme from the existing 161 districts to 640 districts all over the country.

He also distributed certificates to the best performing districts under the programme. In his speech, Modi called for equality between men and women for the society to prosper. He also sought a change in people's mindset towards the girl child. "A mother-in-law can make a lot of difference. If she says she wants a daughter in the house, then no one will be able to hassle a daughter," he said. The prime minister also launched the National Nutrition Mission (NNM) from Jhunjhunu. The mission strives to reduce undernutrition and low birthweight, bring down anaemia among young children, women and adolescent girls and to reduce the prevalence of stunting among children. "We will have to bring in a social revolution. It is important to provide proper nutrition to children," said Modi.

While appreciating Jhunjhunu district for its improvement in sex ratio, the prime minister said, ''With the power of technology the entire nation is connected with Jhunjhunu for furthering Beti Bachao Beti Padhao movement.'' Modi also honoured the district administrations of Sikar and Jhunjhunu for improving the sex ratio. Jhunjhunu district was at the bottom of the sex ratio list in the country prior to the launch of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" programme. In 2011, there were 848 females per 1,000 males, which went up further to 952.
