Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wife Jashodaben suffered injuries in a car accident in Rajasthan and was rushed to a medical facility in Chittorgarh on Wednesday morning.

The accident reportedly took place when Jashodaben was returning to Gujarat after visiting her relatives in Baran district near Kota. The reason for the accident is still not clear but Vasantbhai Modi, one of the relatives, succumbed to injuries. According to the initial details provided by the police, Jashodaben was travelling in an Innova car along with her relatives when the accident took place near Katunda.

The Parsoli police station SHO Shyam Singh confirmed the accident and added that Jashodaben did not suffer any serious injuries. Jashodaben currently lives in the Unjha town of Mehsana district along with her brother Ashok Modi. She is provided security by the Mehsana police force. The images of the injured car and Jashodaben were shared on by news agency ANI. The front part of the car was completely damaged in the accident. However, Jashodaben looked fine.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reportedly acknowledged the Jashodaben as his wife for the first time at the time of filing his nomination for Vadodara seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. She has also been provided with SPG security cover, which is given to the PM and members of immediate family. PM Narendra Modi had reportedly married Jashodaben in 1968 when they were teenagers.

The accident took place minutes before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to speak in the Parliament on the motion of thanks to the President’s address. He was welcomed by the Opposition by loud slogans.  “I see that whenever we are criticised by select Opposition parties, substance is lacking. They go back to saying- when we were in power….This is the same party that divided India,” PM Modi said against the slogans in the Parliament.
