Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said that "demonetisation was a watershed moment in the Indian economy and it was done to change the status-quo."

Addressing a press conference on the eve of Demonitisation anniversary Jaitley said that "Post demonetisation our country has moved on to a much cleaner, transparent and honest financial system. Which will benefit future generations? On the other hand, the Congress has never taken any big steps to curb black money, he added. Jaitley said that "the Modi government is looking to do structural reforms, whereas UPA government was suffering from policy paralysis for 10 years." He said an anti-black money drive is an ethical drive. what is morally and ethically correct is politically correct. Further, he said that Congress and BJP have very different ethics. He says Congress' primary objective is to serve the Family, whereas for them it is to serve the nation.

Terror funding was squeezed because of Demonetisation, shell companies also being easily identified, Jaitley said. Speaking on the benefits of Demonetisation Jaitley said that "one of the important objectives of demonetisation was to make India a less cash economy and thereby reduce the flow of black money in the system." No one had imagined the scale of digital payment currently in India economy, he said that it was a hidden urge of the larger section of our society for a long period of time to root out the curse of black money. Hitting back at former prime minister Manmohan Singh he says, "We had made all preparations needed for demonetisation. It is wrong to say that it was an unprepared move." "All that Singh has to do is to compare the status of Indian economy pre-2014 and post-2014. Pre-2014, Indian economy was one marred with policy paralysis, and today there is no agency that doesn't hail the reforms taken in Indian economy this Singh is Manmohan Singh," Jaitley further added.
