This year, sportspersons have appealed for Diwali to be celebrated keeping the environment in mind.

Diwali is one festival that is celebrated almost universally in India. It is one of the festivals that is celebrated across religions and states and awaited by one and all. Of late, Diwali has also been associated with environmental protection. The rather uncontrolled bursting of crackers during the festival has led to an increase in environmental pollution. It was something that many sportspersons pointed out when they wished a Happy Diwali on their social media accounts.

Indian cricket captainVirat Kohli pointed it out when he wished his fans Happy Diwali. “This Diwali, lets change things up,” said Kohli in his caption. Increased pollution and smog caused primarily due to the bursting of crackers in an and around New Delhi had created a environmental crisis in 2016. Sachin Tendulkar, on the other hand, requested for the festival to be celebrated reponsibly and to not cause inconvenience to senior citizens and animals.
