The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked states to file a compliance report on Ganga Action Plan Phase I by September 8.

The NGT had on Friday issued bailable warrants against Haryana and Rajasthan governments for not submitting their action plan on cleaning and rejuvenation of the river Ganga. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar took strong objection to the absence of the counsel for both the states and their failure to submit the report despite its July 13 order.

On Tuesday, the NGT fixed September 12 as the deadline for submission of plans for Phase II. Over the pollution in river Yamuna, the NGT had last month directed some northern states to submit an action plan for rejuvenation and restoration of the stretch of the river falling beyond the national capital. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar directed Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to file a complete report in this regard.
