Aadhaar:Chidambaram slams Modi govt., says Centre invaded 'Right To Privacy'

Soon after the Supreme Court held Right to privacy as a fundamental right, former union minister P Chidambaram slammed the BJP government for its intention to use 'Aadhaar as a tool'.

Chidambaram said the Aadhaar conceived by the UPA government was '' perfectly compatible with the Right To Privacy''. He hit out at the BJP government for their '' interpretation of the Article 21 which is an invasion of Right To Privacy'."He further defended the concept of Aadhaar card, saying ''no fault in the Aadhaar concept, there is a fault in how this government plans to use or misuse Aadhar as a tool.''

It may be recalled that even Finance Minister Arun Jaitley admitted that Aadhaar was a "great initiative" of the previous UPA government. When asked why Aadhaar was being made mandatory, Jaitley countered by asking why this technology should not be utilised since it was created for public benefit. Earlier in the day, a nine-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court over ruled two previous verdicts which had held that Right to Privacy is not a fundamental right.
