KOLKATA: Expressing displeasure over the shortage of IAS and IPS officers in West Bengal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday mooted the provision of subsidy to produce more civil servants from the state.

Speaking at the South 24 Parganas district administrative review meeting at Pailan on Friday, Mamata Banerjee said: “The latest result has shown that a woman topped the UPSC exams after several attempts. So, we need to give the applicants the time required and also provide subsidy to produce more IAS officers from West Bengal.”

“The IAS and WBCS officers have prestigious and responsible work with a salary of at least Rs 70,000 in the beginning. I urge more students from West Bengal to prepare for the civil services,” she added.

On the other hand, she also suggested using an app to monitor the whereabouts of police officials and asked them to be polite with the public. “I suggest all SPs to use iVMS 4500 app to monitor if the policemen are doing their work or not,” she said.

The West Bengal chief minister also promised to flush out weapons from Bhangar that she said had accumulated during the anti-land acquisition movement earlier this year.

“There are still a lot of arms in Bhangar. We know everything but are not doing anything now out of courtesy. But, we soon need to launch an operation to disarm these villages,” she said.

After students complained of problems they face due to the Centre's discontinuation of UGC non-NET scholarship, CM Banerjee mooted providing Rs 20 crore of the Rs 200 crore ‘Swami Vivekananda scholarship’ to those not receiving a scholarship from the Centre. She also advised students to apply for Bachelors of Education where she said there are 30 per cent vacancies in West Bengal.
