Indian Army has launched a "punitive fire assault" to destroy Pakistani posts across the Line of Control, which would help Indian forces to dominate their positions along India's disputed border with Pakistan.

"As part of our counter-terrorism strategy, punitive fire assault was undertaken across the Line of Control," Maj Gen Ashok Narula, assistant director general in charge of public interface, at the Army headquarters said here.

While the Army officer did not offer a date for the assault, sources said the actions were taken in the recent past. The Army also released a video footage of the action.

Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat visited Srinagar twice in the recent past. Defence minister Arun Jaitley too reviewed the security situation with the Army top brass in Srinagar.

The assault by the artillery and mortars were undertaken in the Naushera and Nawgaum sector, hitting the Pakistani positions on the other side."The action caused damage on their side," he said.

"Pakistani locations were providing support to the terrorists. We want peace and tranquility along the border and want to ensure that the infiltration is down," he said.

Last September, Indian Army undertook a "surgical strike" across the Line of Control, killing terrorists in their camps. The bilateral relations between the two neighbours remain frosty with regular actions being seen at the border.
