In all the posters, songs or promotional images for Veere Di Wedding, two things can be spotted every time- oodles of glamour and the words #ImNotAChickFlick. What is that all about? Why such a need to keep the film away from the tag? And what genre is the film if not that? In a recent interview to Film Companion’s Anupama Chopra, the four lead actors of the film --

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania -- shed some light on the idea. When Chopra asked them why does their film not want to be called a chick flick, Sonam said the word ‘chick’ in itself is derogatory. “Chick is derogatory right? Are we chicks?,” Sonam asked. Shikha gave a more detailed explanation saying, “I think it puts you in a bracket and at an age when we are getting out of labels, I think we should move away from that label as well. At the end of the day, it is a film about four friends regardless of whether it is about men, women, or them mixed together or in love with each other.”

In a recent interview to IANS, Kareena talked about what she thinks the film is at its core. “This is a story that captures various stages of love and marriage of girls. One wants to get married, one is getting divorced, one is commitment phobic... So it is a story of different shades of a relationship.” Ever since the trailer for the film was released, the film has been criticised as shallow for its excessive use of curses. In an interview to PTI, Swara said the makers have tried to show things in as real manner as possible. “I think the criticism is misplaced because this film is about four young urban women, their friendship and their choices. The fact is that young urban women in India, who belong to a certain class or cultural background or lifestyle, they drink, some of them smoke, some use cuss words with friends. We are simply depicting that.

“It is not that it is the only thing we are showing. It is not a story about four women drinking or using cuss words, it is about friendship,” she said. While in the interview with Anupama Chopra, Sonam said that the film is not trying to preach feminism, she said something quite different in an interview to PTI. “Veere... talks about gender equality in a very entertaining way. It is a female driven film, but it is not about women empowerment or anything like that. It is celebrating four people, who are women. The idea is to reach a point where we are not discussing that there are four women in the film. We should be discussing that it is such an entertaining film. I wish we come to a point that it becomes normal to have a film with all female cast,” Sonam said in a group interview. Swara, who plays the role of Sakshi in the film, says the Shashanka Ghosh-directed movie is empowering as it focuses on choices women make.

“For me Veere is empowering as it is about choices. For me what was liberating about this film is that it was about four girls, but there was no violence, social issue or anything. I am not saying this in a derogatory way because I come from that kind of cinema and I am proud of it. But because it is something so liberating, that you can have a normal entertaining film about four girls,” she said. When asked about the film, Kareena said in another interview to IANS, “This film is not trying to bring any kind of trend but I think after watching this film, people will have a changed mindset. It will also change the thought process of directors so they can tell a story of friendship and love through a female perspective also.”The film’s producer Ekta Kapoor also tweeted about the film. “A  generati
