The Marvel Cinematic Universe produced its biggest ever hit with Avengers: Infinity War, the 19th film in the superhero franchise that began with 2008’s Iron Man. Over the weekend, Infinity War crossed the first Avengers film’s $1.5 billion (Rs 10,000 crore) global box office haul to become the biggest Marvel movie ever, and the biggest film of the year.

With $1.6 billion in the bank, and all eyes set on the $2 billion (Rs 13,000 crore) mark -- only three films in history have made more - here’s a look at every box office record the Marvel juggernaut has broken.

* Biggest pre-release sales
Infinity War broke the record for the highest pre-release ticket sales for a superhero movie on online ticketing site, Fandango. Subsequent reports said that Infinity War outpaced Avengers: Age of Ultron’s pre-release sales by 1000%.

* Biggest Thursday previews for MCU
With Thursday previews bringing in $39 million (Rs 263 crore), Infinity War crossed the previous Marvel record of $27 million, set by Age of Ultron.

* Biggest Saturday and Sunday
After failing to make more than Star Wars: The Force Awakens on its first Friday, Infinity War broke the records for biggest Saturday and Sunday gross ever ($82 million and $69 million).

* Biggest domestic and worldwide opening weekend
Infinity War’s $257 million (Rs 1700 crore) tally broke Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $248 million opening weekend record in the US, and The Fate of the Furious’ $540 million worldwide opening record with a huge $641 million (Rs 4300 crore) haul.

* Biggest opening weekend for a Hollywood film in India
On its way to becoming the biggest Hollywood film in India with net earnings of over Rs 200 crore, Infinity War posted opening weekend numbers of over Rs 120 crore.

* Biggest openings around the world
Infinity War posted the biggest opening days in South Korea ($39.2 million), Mexico ($25.1 million), Brazil ($18.8 million), the Philippines ($12.5 million), Thailand ($10 million), Indonesia ($9.6 million) and Malaysia ($8.4 million).

A fourth Avengers film has been scheduled for release in one year. Disney chief Bob Iger recently confirmed that while Avengers 4 will be a ‘significant conclusion’ for the MCU as we know it, the studio had no plans to stop making more Marvel movies. He said that they had over 7000 characters to mine and hinted at a possible merging of the X-Men and Marvel universes, after Disney’s acquisition of Fox comes through. 2019 will also see the release of Captain Marvel and a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and both films are expected to make close to $1 billion worldwide, according to a Forbes report. The same report predicts a sure-shot $2 billion gross for Avengers 4.
