8-yr-old in ICU after teacher pierces his throat for failing to solve math exercise

Pune: An 8-year-old student of a school in Pune's Pimpalwadi has become the recent victim of corporal punishment after being thrashed by his teacher for failing to solve a question in the mathematics paper. Zila Parishad School, Pimpalwadi’s teacher Chandrakant Shinde severely beat the Class II student with a wooden cane and injured his neck.

The family of the young boy, Rohan D Janjire, came to know about the beating when he came back home and vomitted blood. According to reports, the harrowing incident took place on April 10. The boy is now in the ICU of a Pune hospital. "His throat injury is very serious. He is not able to eat anything. He will not be able to speak too unless there is complete recovery,” hospital doctor, Murarji Ghadge, told ANI. The school authorities have been held accountable for this horrific cruelty and an FIR has been registered against the teacher at the Karjat police station.

According to reports, the accused has been booked on charges of assault but is yet to be arrested. "We are monitoring the student's condition. After we record his statement, and if required, the charges may be enhanced," a police officer told news agency IANS. The incident comes days after a four-year-old nursery student was thrashed in Hyderabad for not paying school fee. The child was struck repeatedly with a hard object resulting in injuries on his back and legs.
