Chennai: Police on Wednesday arrested six students, including two juveniles - all students of the Pachaiyappa’s college-  for possession of weapons and attacking a member of the public while creating a ruckus in MKB Nagar near Vyasarpadi. The students had come prepared with weapons to assault students from another college.

However, the public who got wind of the situation chased them away and in the melee, they attacked a woman, who suffered cut injuries, police said. Police said that tension was simmering for the past week between students of Pachaiyappa's college and Ambedkar government college who travel on MTC bus route No.57 plying between Vallalar Nagar and Red Hills. “There was a similar clash about two months ago between students of the same colleges. We were aware of a possible clash and deployed forces along the route,” a police officer said.

On Wednesday evening, Pachaiyappa’s college students,  Sudhakar, Malarmannan, Manikandan, Mohan, Dinesh and two juveniles got down at the traffic signal near Ambedkar College. One of them was also carrying a knife. When the public saw the students gathering with weapons, they attempted to chase them away. But, the students hurled stones at them and inflicted a cut injury on a 46-year-old woman, Kamalammal of BV Colony, Vyasarpadi. A patrol team, a few kilometres away, rushed to the scene and managed to nab six students. All students are from the Red Hills area, police said. While the two juveniles were sent to Borstal school, four others were remanded to judicial custody. Further investigations are on.
