Anyone who uses social media would, at some point in time, have come across the advise to be wary of befriending strangers. Many pay heed to it, but some do not. People being conned, duped and blackmailed by their stranger friends on social media frequently make headlines, but this 20-year-old woman from Maharashtra's Nallasopara was allegedly killed by a Facebook friend.

The accused Haridas Nirgude and the victim Ankita More became friends through Facebook. On Sunday, Nirgude had called More to his house in Nallasopara. After the victim reached there, he demanded sexual favours. When More refused, Nirgude killed her by strangulating her with a shoe lace and disposed her body in the nearby area, said a PTI report. The police have detained Nirgude and he is said to have confessed to committing the crime. Incidents of people being conned by Facebook friends appear on newspapers regularly. In February it was reported that a woman from Chromepet had received a friendship request on Facebook from a stranger. The stranger identified himself as a doctor at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry.

She used to talk to him about certain personal problems she faced and also met him a few times. The stranger asked the woman to give him some jewellery, which he said would be used for rituals to solve her problems. Meanwhile, her parents complained to the police about the missing jewellery and during the investigation, the woman admitted to giving it off. Investigations led policemen to 27-year-old Rahmathullah of Kottakuppam in Villupuram. He had used multiple SIM cards and Facebook accounts to cheat many other women too. He has been remanded in custody by the Judicial Magistrate, Tambaram.
