Bengaluru: Here is bad news for habitual traffic offenders in the city. The Transport Department has decided to share the driving licence (DL) database with the traffic police.

This will help the police register cases against offenders, even if they are driving someone else’s vehicle. The practice has been for the police to register a case against the owner when a vehicle was involved in a rule breach. The decision will also help authorities keep track of a person’s history of previous cases, and initiate action to suspend the licence of habitual offenders.

“We are in the final stage of sharing the database with the traffic police,” said Transport Commissioner B. Dayananda. “Once we are done with it, the police can directly book a case against the person driving or riding vehicles. The move will also help the police keep track of habitual offenders and recommend their driving licence suspension.”The Transport Commissioner, however, maintained that owners will be booked for violations such as plying without a fitness certificate, insurance, etc.
