BMTC to launch smart cards on June 17

Bengaluru: The much-awaited BMTC smart card will be a reality soon. According to BMTC officials, these smart cards will be distributed starting from June 17.

These cards called as Common Mobility Cards were supposed to be introduced in 2015 itself. But due to technical glitches, BMTC was unable to release these cards then.

Later, the BMTC management announced that smart cards will be released by February 2017 but it was not able to stick to the deadline. But now according to the sources, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy will release the smart cards on June 17.

"This smart cards will be distributed for Vajya (AC) bus service commuters in the first phase. Next it will be made available for all commuters. This card can be utilised even in Metro. There is an option to use these cards everywhere through point-of-sale (POS)," stated an officer from BMTC.

"With BMRCL launching full-fledged services on Green and Purple lines, these cards are expected to get huge demand. Every card will be priced at Rs. 5," he added.
