Bengaluru: A day after the BJP-led NDA government announced new cattle slaughter rules by bringing amendments to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals act 1960 called Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2016, the Karnataka government has decided not to implement the rules.

According to reliable sources in the state Congress unit, the government is likely to challenge the new rules in the court of law.According to the sources, once the new rules were notified on Friday, senior party leaders had an informal discussion.

"If the new rules were notified in the state, it may create a lot of problems for farming communities who are already distressed by the continuous drought situation. The rule is expected to further escalate the communal tension, opined all the leaders," said sources.

Legal experts have also advised the Congress government to move to the court of law. "We will soon hold discussion with all the opposition-led state governments including Kerala," explained a senior leader.
